ACA Swiftwater Rescue Skills This 2 day comprehensive course teaches hands-on advanced rescue scenarios in river environments with techniques & methods specific for packrafters.

Course Description:

 

Being prepared is an essential skill to learn and develop as a packrafter, especially in Alaska. Build skills to identify, prevent & manage risk on the river. Develop a rescue mindset & learn an assessment process to “get the big picture” in critical situations. Practice using rescue gear and simple to complex rescue techniques. This 2 day comprehensive course teaches hands-on advanced rescue scenarios in river environments with techniques & methods specific for packrafters.  Information is tied together at the end of the course with an extended mock rescue scenario. 



Course Objectives:

 

  • Proactive prevention of river accidents and injuries
  • Develop, refine & practice self-rescue skills
  • Identify & avoid river hazards by understanding hydrology, river features & danger potential
  • Focus on fast, low-risk strategies for early management of river accidents
  • Develop & practice methods for swimmer recovery & loose boats/equipment
  • Develop & practice rope-based rescue & in-water skills
  • Gain experience with rescue PFD features, learn it’s strengths and weaknesses
  • Utilize rescue scene management, organization & prioritization principles needed within a paddling group

 

Students who are active ACA members at the time of their course can request a Skills Assessment from their instructor.

 

There are no examination requirements at the close of this course, however attendance, participation, acquisition of skills & ability to work in a group will be assessed throughout the course.  

 

Upon successful completion, participants will receive an ACA Level 4 Swiftwater Rescue Certificate of Completion (accepted by most river outfitters, paddlesports schools & outdoor programs/guiding outfits)

Prerequisites

  • Be able to independently participate in all individual skills and activities listed in the course outline while also maintaining an appropriate and safe body position
  • Ability to hold breath while underwater while wearing a properly fitted rescue PFD
  • Ability to independently turn from a face down to a face up position keeping their head above water
  • Be able to effectively communicate with the instructor and other course participants
  • Be able to manage all personal care independently, or with assistance of a companion
  • Be able to manage all personal mobility independently, or with assistance of a companion
  • Comfort in class II whitewater (recommended, but if you’re 100% new to river environments, that’s okay- just let us know so we can help you best prepare)

Perfect for the “never ever” packrafter or those who have paddled a few times, but without formal instruction. This course exposes you to the essentials of packrafting- both the hiking & paddling aspects. You’ll leave with a strong foundation in packrafting basics.

Level 2: Whitewater Essentials

For paddlers with previous packrafting experience wanting to strengthen their ability to read & paddle class II-III rivers.  River safety, rescue skills & risk assessment is also practiced.

The “Week of Rivers” offers a blend of exploration & skill progression. This is a frontcountry tour, showing you a different river each day, a mix of roadside runs & others we hike into.
